From The Guardian – Boko Haram vows to fight until Nigeria establishes sharia law
What kind of nut thinks God would be pleased about the killing of over a thousand people? I really fear for the state of the human race when this kind of fanaticism exists. It does not surprise me at all that they are threatening to target schools and universities. When a bunch of unreasoning brutes are trying to take charge, the last thing they would want is the masses being taught to think for themselves or being educated enough to search for information past what they are given.
It disturbs me that people create weapons designed to harm others and then give them to these hateful fanatics who would not have had the means to create such destructive tools on their own. My suspicion is being fanatical probably takes up a good deal of time and mental activity, not leaving much left for being calm, logical and creative enough to design stuff like guns. Not knowing anything at all about guns, I am obviously talking out my behind here. I just feel that people who create, produce, then sell weapons are in part responsible for what their products are used for.
Groups like Boko Haram would kill those who they see as opponents regardless of whether or not they had guns and bombs. If not guns, then swords, if not swords, then clubs. Groups of violent men have been slaughtering parts of the population for as long as our history has been recorded. Probably longer. However, they would kill a lot less efficiently without guns and that would save lives.
Religion has been the inspiration for some amazing creations, deeds and people. Yet, it also appeals to many as an excuse for hatred and violence. For me it is a construct. The idea that people are running about killing other people they don’t even know because of a construct that we ourselves created is insane.
What is to be done?!
